Delivery Through the App Store Is the Reason for Lion’s Low Price

MacRumors has done a bang up job and has compared the new international pricing for Mac OS X Lion, compared to 2009’s Snow Leopard release, and has found that Apple has significantly lowered prices for the international crowd.

The report goes on to extrapolate that the price more or less stayed the same for Lion ($29.99) as compared to Snow Leopard ($29), in the U.S. and Canada. The international community saw the price drop significantly, and they assume it is due to Lion’s digital-only distribution.

Some prices in Asian countries have not been announced, but for others such as Austrailia, New Zealand, and Switzerland saw the largest price drops. Here’s another chart from MacRumors:

Overall, it seems like a good deal for a major 10.X upgrade. And, as I point out every time a story like this emerges, this is eating Microsoft’s lunch, who makes a significant portion of their money from upgrades which are usually $150+, so there’s that.
