It is being reported that the video player in iOS 5 will sync 1080p content. Now speculation has arisen suggesting that 1080p support is coming to the next-gen iPhone, and Apple TV, which will presumably be based on the more powerful A5 chip that powers the iPad 2.
As you may know, the current Apple TV, as well as the current iPod touch and iPhone, are powered by the A4 chip, and are capable of 720p output. Oddly the iOS has had, in certain situations, support for 1080p for some time. However, official 1080p output has not been officially baked into the OS as of yet.
I’m no developer, but I can’t see Apple pushing out a new Apple TV this fall. It’s not a new gotta-have device like an iPhone or iPod, it’s an appliance. I would venture to say that Apple will be able to wring out 1080p support on the current hardware.
