Some Verizon iPads Stopped In Transit, Other Sales Halted, Due to Duplicate MEIDs

Leaks from Apple retail stores claim that Apple has given stores a list of serial numbers to match with, and then send back to HQ.

As for the reason for the recall- One Apple store employee claimed that the issue at hand comes from Verizon having duplicated Mobile Equipment Identifiers (MEIDs) which have already been used once on one set of Verizon iPads, but due to the screw up, are also found on a second batch. This second batch, when trying to set up cellular accounts, are being told that the account is already set up.

Apple is apparently handling this on a per-case basis, and handing out credits for peripherals and the like, to unsatisfied customers. They also report, via the Wall Street Journal, that the number of affected customers was “extremely small”, so there’s that.
