Apple Selling Unlocked iPhone 4s in U.S.

If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.

As Apple themselves points out, the best reason to buy an unlocked iPhone 4, is for international travelers, who will be using the device on local carriers. There are only two GSM networks in the US- AT&T and T-Mobile, with only AT&T being fully compatible with the iPhone 4. T-Mobile’s voice service will work on the iPhone, but not their 3G data service.

Apple’s done this before. If I recall correctly, they made a similar move with the first or second generation iPhone, in an attempt to clear inventory to make way for the new model. It seems early, but Apple is likely clearing stock in preparation for new iPhone hardware coming this September.
