Software Evidence Emerges Indicating New Time Capsule, Airport Extreme Hardware

timecap.jpgApple yesterday released Aiport Utility 5.3.3, which offers bug fixes. However, MacRumors readers discovered references to next-generation Airport Extreme and Time Capsule hardware, buried in the update.

This isn’t a particularly surprising discovery when coupled with all of the news rumors we heard regarding Time Capsule and Airport Extreme, leading up to WWDC. Some went so far as to suggest we would see the updates released sometime that week during the conference. That didn’t happen.

The report also notes, which we’ve heard as fact before, that there is references in the code to software updates being cached on the Time Capsule, which could then be dispersed to relevant devices at a faster speed, than each device downloading the update from the web.

So here’s what we’ve heard so far. Apple appears to be cooking up new Airport Extremes and Time Capsules powered by A4 or A5 chips, the same found in iPhone 4 and iPad 2. And it appears the device will cache updates.
Today’s find just seems to confirm that new hardware is indeed coming.
