Monster Soup is an enchanting new $0.99 title from the “ridiculously independent” Kieffer Bros. studio (the folks who brought us Abca and Aqueduct).
As was the case with Abca, Monster Soup effortlessly blends some classic gameplay elements, like a Bejeweled-style connect the similarly styled icons mechanic and a reversed Tetris-styled element where soup monsters fall upwards into ice. Throw the idea of temporary power-ups into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a casual game that’s relaxing at first, and incredibly hectic once you hit the level seven mark.
I’m still not sure if death is inevitable in Monster Soup (I see a Level 20 final achievement in the menu), but whenever I was presented with the Game Over screen, I never felt like it was the game’s fault. I’d simply stop for a moment, yell “KEE-FERR” into the air, and re-double my efforts to break my high score – and at the end of the day, isn’t that what casual gaming is all about?
Monster Soup has also benefited from the patented Kieffer Bros. attention to detail, with a delightful main menu, cute and quaint little monsters, and possibly the best buttons sound effects to hit iOS since Aqueduct. The developers at this indie studio are masters at creating interfaces that are as deceptively awesome at their games, and this title is no exception. If every casual game had as much TLC as Monster Soup, my home screen would be filled with casual titles, and I’d never get any work done.
I realize this is quite a gushing review, but this isn’t just any regular bowl of soup – this is Monster Soup.
As for the download link, you can pick up Monster Soup for iPhone and iPad from the App Store.
