Instamap is a quick-and-easy way to track Instragram pics from across the globe, right from your iPad. The app is organized into three sections: Subscriptions, My Stream, and Popular Photos.
Subscriptions are split into locations and tags. The app launches with a couple of defaults for New York, Paris, #streetart, and, err, #flower, but your’e free to add more at any time by tapping on the + button in the top-right corner of the screen.
My Stream is the timeline view of Instagram, which shows all of your pictures, as well as those of the people you follow. Popular Photos predictably shows the set of the most popular Instagram snaps of the moment.
The main draw of Instamap are the two views that it provides: Pictures and Map. The former looks like a much larger version of the thumbnail view you get on the official iPhone app, but the latter offers something a little different. Map view shows the geo-location pins for pictures in the section you’re viewing, and it only ever requires two taps to jump into the thumbnail view for photos from a particular area. When viewing a single picture, you’ll be able to do most of the basics, like add hearts, view comments, and check the original account and caption.
What you can’t do within Instamap, unfortunately, is check out user profiles for more of their pictures. I’m not sure whether this is due to an API limitation, but browsing user profiles after viewing a great shot is one of my favourite ways of using Instagram, and it has been sorely missed within Instamap.
That said, this $1.99 app is still a very cheap and very elegant way of perusing the world of stylized, square snapshots, and if a future update can provide support for viewing (and perhaps following) profiles, then I believe Instamap will find itself on a lot more home screens.
In the mean time, here’s an App Store link for Instamap for the InstaCurious.
