DailyTech is reporting on a rumor that has died down as of late, that is, Apple is preparing to enter the television set market with their own offering. Specifically, this report claims a “former Apple executive” states that Apple has entered into a partnership with a consumer electronics manufacturer to build the sets, which would have Apple TV and iTunes capabilities baked right in.
Even with these televisions being built by another company, they would be Apple-branded, and marketed by Apple as well. Reportedly, the release is slated for this fall, but could be pushed to early next year if needed.
Several odd things strike me about this report. First, the “former Apple executive” bit. Secondly, the unnamed consumer electronics manufacturer. Thirdly, the report claims that it’s essentially a television set with an Apple TV built in. How does this simplify anything, other than removing one set-top box from your clutter? Unless Apple is really doing something different on the software side, and this report makes no mention of that, then what’s the point? The whole report seems very vague.
Plus, as the Apple TV stands, and with the introduction of AirPlay, you can effectively make the device a game console (with iPhone or iPad games that support AirPlay). Also, think if Apple were to open up the Apple TV to native development. Endless possibilities.
Maybe I just don’t get the concept of an Apple-branded television set. Apple, surprise me.
