Here’s a quick thought I’m posting at the risk of exposing myself as one of the laziest readers in the history of mankind. I’d like to half-heartedly propose that iBooks add an extra input option (aside from touchscreen gestures): voice commands. I think it would be a fun and interesting mechanic to have a voice command on-screen that could respond to commands like:
- brighten
- dim
- next/previous
- define <word>
This would allow you to curl up with the iPad in most any position, since you would be free to speak simple commands to turn the page or adjust brightness on the fly. I’d even go so far as to propose that iBooks lock down the touchscreen while voice command is on – except for the microphone toggle, of course. This would allow you to hold the iPad in whatever way you wanted, without having to worry about a stray digit accidentally turning five pages forward (iBooks tends to over-estimate my reading speed that way).
iOS 5 is introducing an interesting paradigm shift with the new Split iPad keyboard that you can drag up and down the screen, and voice commands have been available on the iPhone for a couple of years now, so I don’t see a voice-enabled iBooks as a very radical shift.
Thoughts?
