New iPod Touch Model References Found in Latest iOS 5 Build

A few weeks ago, references were found in the then-latest build of iOS 5, for new iPhone and iPad models. When those references were found, no references were found for a next-generation iPod touch mode.

iFans has since found a reference to an “iPod4,2” which is a reference string for the next-generation iPod touch. The current iPod touch is labeled as “iPod4,1”.

Another item of interest is that fact that it’s labeled “iPod4,2” and not “iPod5,2”. The “iPod5,2” would suggest a new model, but a “iPod4,2” designation suggests only a minor update. How do we know this? Past experience. Looking back to iOS 3.0 when a “iPod 2,2” reference was found, it accurately predicted that 2009’s iPod touch model would be a minor update, and it was. That is, only internals were upgraded, the enclosure design remained the same.

This seems to be Apple’s strategy for both the iPhone and iPod touch. That is, every two models comes a major redesign. The next-generation iPhone is expected to look very similar to the current iPhone 4.
