9to5Mac is reporting, using internal Apple documents as their source, that the upcoming next-generation Mac Pros will come in configurations ranging from 6 to 16 cores. These new machines are said to be shipping in the late July, early August timeframe.
We’ve heard the July/August timeframe before. What makes this interesting is that any processor that would fit this bill, isn’t due out until Q4 of this year. Specifically, Apple would likely utilize two 8-core processors for the 16-core machine. The processors they would likely utilize for that configuration would of course be the Sandy Bridge architecture. Server class processors made with that architecture won’t be available until later in the year.
Yes, Apple has been granted early access to Intel processors before. But not as early as this timeframe suggests. This is where a second rumor comes into play. The one that suggested that the next-generation Mac Pros would be equipped with a “unique CPU”. Again, this wouldn’t be an outrageous claim, because the original MacBook Air was built with a custom Intel CPU.
