DreamBoard  [Jailbreak]

Picked by: Brandon

DreamBoard

My POTW is DreamBoard (free on Cydia) along with the OS7 theme. I’ve been playing around with DreamBoard for the better part of the week and while it definitely has some quirks (spotlight not useable, status bar going clear on some apps, and manual tweaking of themes) it’s a really cool way to give your iPhone a whole new look. Every once in a while I toy with the idea of picking up a Windows 7 phone to test it out, but they cost money and I’ve got a huge amount invested in the app store, so DreamBoard has given my iPhone new look and at least for the time being a less boring old iPhone feel. If you decide to check it out, plan on trying a few different themes and wasting some time playing with things… This isn’t Winterboard – it’s a whole new beast!

WordFoto (v1.0.2)

Picked by: AliciaB

WordFoto

My choice for App of the week is WordFoto for iPhone. WordFoto is a wonderful little app that is great for creative photos. It takes a picture and creates a new image combining words with the visual picture. Of course, it’s fully customizable with many options. Take any picture, choose your words, then a preset colour scheme or create your own style and even fine tune how the words are displayed across the canvas. Check out this flickr page or this one for ideas and inspiration. People are doing some amazing work. The possibilities are endless. Although I don’t foresee using this regularly, it is a nice tool when I need to be creative with images that should be special. Who could have foreseen using the iPhone to create such unique images?

iTunes Festival London 2011 (v2.0)

Picked by: PatrickJiTunesFestivalLondon2011

The iTunes Festival takes place in London this year, at The Roundhouse in Camden. As the screenshot highlights, the festival this year features 62 artists performing live on all 31 days of July. And this lovely little free app lets you watch every show live! It shows you the schedule for all the gigs, and has a Live tab where you can pop in to see what’s playing right now. It’s got AirPlay video support, so you can take in all the shows on your big screen if you’ve got an Apple TV.

The lineup for the festival is impressive, which makes the app even more appealing. Artists appearing include Adele, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters, Moby, My Chemical Romance, and Manic Street Preachers.

Slice It!® (v1.7.0)

Picked by: Joe TomasonesliceIt

First there was Angry Birds.  Then there was Cut The Rope. Then Gears. Now, the latest game to invade your psyche and cause you to mutter angrily to yourself with your head tilted down towards a tiny screen is Slice It!.

This is the latest incarnation of a game that is simple in premise and maddening in practice.   The object is to divide a shape into a given number of pieces with a given number of cuts – and make no mistake, it must be exactly the numbers given for both cuts and resulting shapes.  Not hard enough? OK – each of the pieces must contain close to exactly the same area as the others.  So while it is simple to cut a circle into two equal pieces with 1 cut, it’s another matter to slice a trapezoid in 4 pieces with 3 cuts.  Try it sometime.  Actually, I rather suspect you will, once you try Slice It! out.

Slice It! is 99 cents in the App Store, and there is a free lite version (“Slice It! Begins”) as well.
