Adonit has released the Writer 2 for iPad 2 on their own website and on Amazon.com for an introductory price of $99. Like the Writer that came before it, the Writer 2 looks like a compact folio case while closed, but functions as a full clamshell iPad typing solution when opened up. The Writer 2 also features Smart Cover-like magnets for auto-sleep, extra keyboard keys for Home and Search make clamshell operation easier, and opening and closing the case will toggle both the iPad and the built-in Bluetooth keyboard on or off.
I spent a couple of days last week grappling with the BUY button on Adonit’s website. On the one hand, I do love typing and writing on an iPad, and the Writer 2 was designed to rock in that regard. However, one of the other aspects I love about my current Smart Cover + Apple Keyboard combo is its flexibility. I keep the Smart Cover on almost all the time and pull the Apple Keyboard out only when I need it. That’s because the Smart Cover functions more than just a screen cover, but also as an excellent landscape and portrait stand that saves me the trouble of holding the 1.3 lb. device up. As fantastic as the Writer 2 is for landscape typing, it’s simply too specialized a tool for the way I like to use my iPad, and the $99 price tag is way outside of my current impulse buying capabilities.
This is not a knock against Adonit’s new product, though. I just wanted to explain that, although I’ve posted a few times about this intriguing new keyboard case, I likely won’t be reviewing it on iSource any time soon.
