Apple Looking Into a ‘New Way of Charging’ for 2012’s iPhone Model

iphone-4-low-signal.jpgFollowing up their previous report regarding the next-generation iPhone, The Wall Street Journal now reports that Apple is looking into several new changes for 2012’s iPhone model. Specifically, a “new way of charging” an iPhone.

The report does not go into detail regarding what Apple is exactly experimenting with, but one obvious possibility is induction charging, similar to that found on the HP Palm Pre. That is, set the device on a charging pad, and thats it. No cables to plug in. This also makes sense in that Apple is making a push for cloud syncing with their iCloud initiative. Induction charging would make the iPhone a truly cordless device.

This report wraps up with claims that Apple is working on a less expensive iPhone, one that will have an edge-to-edge screen. In other words they’re talking about the mythical “iPhone nano” we’ve heard about since practically the beginning of the iPhone.

To me, it’s pretty clear Apple isn’t going to make a smaller iPhone, but instead make the previous year’s iPhone model this year’s $99 model. Apple’s devices are probably as cheap as they’re going to get. The barrier to entry now, is the carrier plans. Some of us just can’t afford a $90 bill each month for two years. If Apple want’s to penetrate deeper into the market, they’re just going to have to convince the carriers to offer a cheap cellular plan. Perhaps I’m wrong, but to me, a smaller iPhone would not be a great experience, and Apple doesn’t do mediocre experiences.
