Apple Set to Launch “HD+” Offering 1080p Resolution iTunes Movies

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is preparing to support 1080p movies in their iTunes Store, sometime later this year. The source of this piece comes from reports of film studios submitting digital films to Apple in a new higher resolution 1080p “HD+” format.

The report also notes that at least of three to five of the major movie studios have submitted this fall’s upcoming titles in an optional 1920×1080 resolution with bitrates of 10 Mbps.

The report also brings forward previous rumors that suggest Apple is working on a new Apple TV capable of handling 1080p. It has also been discovered that iOS 5 will support 1080p video as well.

As it stands, Apple itself has the bandwidth to deliver 1080p video content, but Apple is afraid that users’ internet connections aren’t robust enough to handle the load of 1080p video without a significant buffer time. Apple could offer it as a download, but the current Apple TV only has 8GB of storage.

So, it appears that 1080p is headed for iTunes. I just seems that the infrastructure around it, specifically internet connection speeds, will weaken it’s splash at launch.
