AppleInsider is reporting on the speculation of Ming-Chi Kuo, a Concord Securities analyst, who claims that Apple is preparing to phase out the white MacBook. Specifically, Kuo points to international shipment forecasts show that MacBook shipments are winding down, and there are no signs of a replacement.
Kuo goes on to point to the $999 (same price as the MacBook) entry-level MacBook Air as a viable replacement for MacBook, for Apple’s lower-end customers. Also, Apple’s MacBook shipments have reportedly slumped off to just 80,000-100,000 units per month, which is only 10% of their total Mac shipments.
This makes sense if you take into account the other recent rumors regarding the next-generation MacBook Air. That is, the new machine is expected to carry a minimum of 128GB of SSD storage, and 4GB of RAM, making it a viable replacement for MacBook customers.
