Apple Now The World’s Top Smartphone Seller, Overtakes Nokia

Screen shot 2011-03-08 at 1.08.14 AM.pngThe Financial Times is reporting that Apple has passed Nokia, and is now the world’s top smartphone vendor. Apple’s amazing growth along with Nokia’s market share drop off, allowed Apple to overtake Nokia by 3.6 million units in Q2 2011.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, both Nokia and RIM have lost, and continue to lose market share, as the market evolves around them. Apple passed RIM last year, and passed Nokia this year.

On the flip side, Apple is facing fierce competition from Google’s Android platform, with HTC and Samsung leading the way. Subsequently, Apple has filed suits against both of those companies for hardware patent infringement.
