The people who feel strongly about Android, evangelize the platform, write Android applications, and get into flame wars with us iPhone fans are absolutely likely to be more aware of the risks, but if you walk into an AT&T or Verizon store, the walls are lined with Android phones, and the sales people push the Android phones hard. A lot of ordinary people have Android phones and ordinary people outnumber the people who write blogs about Android or advocate or develop for the platform – by an order of magnitude.

The fact is, regardless of platform, most users think of their phone as, well… a phone, and don’t think about security. On an open platform where it’s easier to write and distribute malicious code, that can be a problem, so I’m not sure the conclusion of the survey is as off-base as you think.
