Apple to Phase Out Developer Access of UDIDs in iOS 5

liosfive.jpgTechCrunch is reporting that Apple will be phasing out the ability for developers to access an iOS device’s Unique Device Identifier (UDID) in iOS 5. As an alternative, Apple is now asking developers to create unique identifiers specifically for their applications, as a way to tie installations to specific users.

This has been an issue for Apple and other companies for some time. So bad in fact, that Apple and a handful of developers have been sued over the use of UDIDs. Why? Well, UDIDs can’t be linked with a specific user, but can be tied to a device.

This is just the kind of information advertisers pay for, and allows them to track what devices are being used, and the applications installed on it. In turn, this allows advertisers to pinpoint their ads to specific users, based on the information they sneakily gathered. Apple is just trying to break up that process.
