Review: Stump Stand for iPhone and iPad

The Stump is a great iPad and iPhone stand with a small desk footprint and a rugged design. The Stump website advertises the fact that the stand is portable, but I would argue that it is most at home on a desk. The whole package weighs less than a pound, which still manages to be solid enough to anchor the iPad to the table, but is a little on the heavy side for portable usage. I prefer simply leaving the Stump on my desk when it is not in use, since this little rubber stand does a great job of blending in . You don’t tend to think of stumps as attractive, but this one actually is.

The major advantage of the Stump design is its simplicity: you simply place it on a flat surface and then put your iPad on top of it. It’s instant elegance. If you place the iPad right on top, you have a decent angle for typing or browsing. Placing the iPad in the top-most groove of the Stump makes for a great e-book reading position. Finally, using the bottom of the Stump sets the iPad up at an almost 90° angle, which is great for games of Words with Friends in portrait mode. The Stump can also accommodate an iPhone in the top groove, but keep in mind that this is really just a viewing angle, since you won’t be able to thread a cable underneath the stand.

I also love how placing an iPhone or iPad into either groove will still allow you to use the Home button, thanks to the rounded cut-out up front (shown below).

In this past week with the Stump I had almost forgotten that my smart cover existed. This $25 stand does everything I need it to in terms of supporting my iPad while at my desk , and I love how little space it takes up when not in use. This unassuming Stump of a stand is a real winner in my book.
