Techcrunch is reporting that at minimum one developer has found footprints left from Apple testing the next-generation iPhone with currently shipping applications. The metaphorical footprints in question are developer logs which point to a dual-mode iPhone capable of receiving both CDMA and GSM data signals. Also worth noting, is that this iPhone was running iOS 5, which suggests that dual-mode hardware may be in our immediate future.
Apple currently supports both the Verizon (CDMA) and AT&T (GSM) networks by producing two separate models of the iPhone 4. However, it’s believed that the next-generation iPhone will carry the dual-band chip, and thus be able to support either carrier right out of the box. In fact, the current Verizon iPhone 4 ships with just such a chip, but for some reason, Apple has disabled that functionality.
Couple this information with the recent report that the iPhone is coming to Sprint, and it appears that Apple will be rolling out a true “world” device.
