A Few Very Quick Thoughts on Steve Jobs’ Resignation

Tonight’s a sad night if you’re a fan of Steve Jobs. Despite the fact he is going to take up the role of chairman at Apple, it’s hard not feel a little saddened by the opening line of his resignation letter:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

Just a few very quick thoughts I have after following all the Jobs resignation news this evening:

We Don’t Know Far More than We Know:

— As is so often the case with Apple and Jobs, what we know is substantially less than what we don’t know.

— We know he has resigned as CEO and is taking on the role of chairman. We don’t know why he made the decision to resign, though many are assuming it is because his health is deteriorating. That could be true, or it could be that his health is improving but he has been advised to take a small step back in order to help keep it that way.

— We know that he has already been on a medical leave of absence for many months, was already not the acting CEO of Apple, and was staying involved in strategic decisions. We don’t know whether he’ll continue in the same sort of way as chairman, or increase his role, or have less and less involvement.

— We know that Tim Cook has filled in for Jobs as ‘interim CEO’ on more than one occasion and done a tremendous job. Apple’s performance and profits have only continued to rise. We don’t know how well the company will fare if Jobs role diminishes over coming months and years.

What We Can Hope For:

— I hope this decision was not taken due to worsening health – but more as a pro-active measure to help prevent further health issues by taking on too much.

— I hope if Jobs’ health is stable or improving, that he will take a very active role as chairman, and that he’s there for years to come.

— I hope we’ll still see Jobs at Apple keynote events – they’re just not the same without him.

What are your thoughts on Jobs’ resignation?
