The Wall Street Journal has posted a piece regarding the problems ahead of Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook. However, in that article they mention that Apple is creating a “new technology to deliver video to televisions”. The report more or less leaves it at that. However, it has revived rumors that Apple is indeed working on a television subscription service, the likes of which could replace cable as we know it.
The report seems to go beyond Apple’s existing AirPlay technology which allows users to stream content from their iOS device to other AirPlay enable devices such as the Apple TV.
Of course, this also smacks of the rumors we’ve heard that Apple is interested in entering the television set market. But of course, Apple has shown that their interest in the market is limited, only offering the set-top Apple TV, and accompanying iTunes content. They also noted that entering the television business is difficult, as there is a lot of fragmentation amongst cable providers and TV sets.
At any rate, Apple is indeed working on something related to video streaming, and if it’s anything like AirPlay, it could be spectacular.
