Just after yesterday’s discovery of antenna parts claimed to be intended for the “iPhone 4S”, images have been posted today by MacPost.net claiming to be the back cover of an unspecified, upcoming iPhone. The prototype has an EVT (Engineering Verification Test) designation, and was dated June 7,2011.
More interestingly, the part is labeled with an internal code of “N94”, the same code believed to be associated with the next-generation iPhone. No, not the “iPhone 4S”, but the real, all-new iPhone. In other words, this iPhone might be the fabled “iPhone 5”.
The AT&T iPhone 4 carries the model designation of N90, while the Verizon version has a N92 designation. It had also been reported that device with an N94 supported T-Mobile’s 3G service. So in short this N94 iPhone is believed to look like the iPhone 4, has a redesigned antenna, supports the T-Mobile network, and has an A5 Processor.
This doesn’t necessarily mean this will be the full-on, all-new, iPhone. It could simply be the “iPhone 5”. The confusion stems from these parts, which were previously unassociated with a case design. This very well could be the cheaper, iPhone 4 variant, but that would mean that model would sport a faster A5 processor.
This has been the first time in memory that the iPhone refresh has become more confusing as we get closer to launch, than becoming more clear. So it remains to be seen how this will play out. Whether Apple will release a revised iPhone 4, built to be cheaper as the lower-end device, and an all new iPhone on the high-end. I would guess it would play out that way, but it is very uncertain at this time.
