Best Free iPhone App of the Week: SB Nation

Smart phones are a dream come true for sports fans.  It is hard to even remember what my life as a sports fan was like before owning my first smart phone.  If I wasn’t able to watch one of my favorite teams play, I was left to wonder what was going on in the game or to try to find someone who had caught a glimpse of the score.  Now, if I have to miss a game, checking the score or reading about my teams is as easy as sliding my phone out of my pocket and firing up one of my many sports apps.  I have a regular set of  “go to” apps when I want a sports fix.  This week an excellent new app was added to my daily sports “go to” list with the release of the free SB Nation App.

Many sports fans will probably already be familiar with sbnation.com.  This website is a collection of hundreds of sports blogs following all the major pro and college teams in the United States and around the world.  The SB Nation app allows you to follow all the major stories around the sports world by giving you easy access to the stories in these blogs.  When you boot up the app, it takes you to a newsfeed listing all the biggest sports news stories of the day.

The greatest thing about the SB Nation app is the ability to customize it to your liking.  By tapping on the “Lineup” tab on the bottom of the app screen, you are taken to the blog feeds of your favorite teams or sports.  The sports and teams that you include in your customized “Lineup” also are worked into the main news feed that appears when you launch the app.  I really like the ability to not only glance through the major sports headlines, but also to have news on my favorite teams worked into the main news feed as well.

You are given the option to “Follow” any of the news stories that appear within feeds in the app.  By going to the “Following” menu inside the app, you are then presented with a list of stories on the same topic as the stories you have followed.  For instance, when one of your team’s most important players is hurt in a game, you can choose to follow the original story that broke the news of the injury.  You will then be updated in your “Following” menu with more news stories as they roll in about the player and his injury.

For all sports fans looking to read more about their favorite sports and teams, the SB Nation app is a welcome new app for a quick sports fix.

The SB Nation app is now available on the App Store.
