We’ve heard recently that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has begun a test run of Apple’s next-generation system on a chip, currently dubbed the A6.
Based on what Apple has done so far, the company has introduced a new mobile processor with the introduction of each new iPad model. Judging by that logic, the next-generation iPad will also have an improved processor- the mythical A6 chip.
It is now being reported by Kevin Krewell, a Linley Group analyst (via CNET) that full blown production of the A6 chip will not begin until the second quarter of 2012, which in turn means any product based on the new processor won’t be available until June at the earliest.
As for the specifics of the chip, the report claims that it will be a quad-core chip with “3D” transistor technology.
This report seems to squash any hopes that Apple would be introducing a new iPad by the end of this year. Plus, this timeline would make sense, if Apple really is planning on rolling out an iPad with a high-resolution “Retina” display. It would give the company more time for the price of those components to come down, plus a new chip would likely be needed to power such a pixel-dense display. That is, if all of this holds to be true.
