What seems strange to me is that you CANNOT SWITCH BETWEEN TABS in Safari using gestures. Arrrrggg!!!!
It would be nice to set 2-finger swipe for back/forward and 3-finger swipe for previous/next tab (or vice-versa). I can’t believe Apple left that out. That makes us turn to third-party apps like the free “BetterTouchTool” (which in my opinion is still a bit buggy).

In reply to Duncan Moran. Yikes! Thanks to all the commenters who suggested the three-finger swipe. I had definitely played around with those settings before, but not quite in this magical combination. I'll update the post soon to reflect what I've learned from you folks.

This is so true. After a few weeks I still instinctively use a back swipe all over Lion, but it only works in Safari All I need in life is the back swipe to work universally along with a bluetooth numeric pad!

too bad there is a back gesture in osx lion, i use it all the time still, you just have to be intelligent enough to figure out how to use it (swiping 3 fingers left in almost any app) and ill soon be using it to escape your horrible website in firefox

Unless I am completely misunderstanding you…

System Preferences > Trackpad > More Gestures > Swipe between pages set to Swipe left or right with three fingers

Works for me in a Finder window, iTunes etc.

There is. Just choose two or three finger swipe under swipe between pages and make sure mission control uses four finger swipe

Hey, you can actually set the 3 fingers gesture on even with the 2 fingers swipe gesture. I also though that Apple had remove it. But later found that it is still there. But you have to first disable the 3 fingers gesture for the window mover on the first page of multi gesture window.

Not to sound like a weirdo but…. this is one of the main reasons I haven’t upgraded to Lion yet. I kid you not. o_O
