Zen Brush is a shockingly good app for creating simple paintings and images on your iPad. Out of all the drawing apps I’ve tried on my tablet thus far, Zen Brush has done the best job of making me forget that my finger isn’t *actually* a brush.
There are only three shades in the app (black, white, and grey), but the essence of putting a brush to paper has been captured so beautifully that I simply forget about the lack of colour or a multitude of settings. It admittedly sounds a little cheesy, but putting your finger to the screen in Zen Brush is just so elementally cool that you focus more on the shapes and the feel of the brush and tend to forget all about the fact that your drawings are in plain black or white.
The creators of Zen Brush understand that there’s something powerful and fascinating about interacting directly with a touchscreen, and in much the same manner that Apple nailed the feel of touch scrolling, Zen Brush really captures the magic of broad, sweeping strokes across a page. This app just feels so right.
This is also one of the few apps where the various available backgrounds really feel like they serve a purpose. Painting on a plain white background feels different than painting on bordered Japanese paper. Zen Brush is also intelligent about its background and paint, so should you choose to swap your black background for a white one, your drawing will automagically switch shades (white drawings become black, and vice versa).
If you’ve been searching for an accessible and fun way to get creative with your iPad, you simply have to give Zen Brush a try – and at just $2.99 for the iPhone and iPad versions, it’s easy to pick the app up without disrupting your (or your wallet’s) Zen.
