VR-Zone is reporting that Apple is still considering the use of USB 3.0 in their future computer offerings. Of course, Apple currently ships USB 2.0 in their computers, and USB would offer data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than that of USB 2.0.
It is believed the main reason Apple isn’t adopting the new standard is due to a lack of support from computer component manufacturers such as Intel. That’s about to change however, because Intel’s forthcoming “Ivy Bridge” CPU architecture will support USB 3.0 alongside their Thunderbolt offering.
It remains to be seen if Apple will, let alone when, implement the USB 3.0 standard. They’ve updated most of their computers this year to Intel’s current platform, and it’s not expected for them to update it again until next year.
The only candidate machine to receive USB 3.0 this year, would be the Mac Pro, which hasn’t seen an update in over a year. There is also rumors that Apple will be introducing a entirely new computer line, which, while we’re thawing everything at it, could also be a contender for USB 3.0.
Personally, I think Apple will hold out on USB 3.0 just to see if Thunderbolt takes off. Besides, Apple is moving ever further in a wireless direction.
