Best Free iPhone App of the Week: Sportcaster

After featuring a sports app for last week’s app of the week, I didn’t plan on featuring two sports apps in a row.  However, I couldn’t pass up featuring the Sportcaster app this week because I was so impressed by its originality.

Nothing beats watching your favorite team play with a group of passionate sports fans.  For me, a big part of the fun on game day is analyzing the plays, questioning the coaching decisions, and having spirited discussions and arguments with those I am sharing the game with.

The Sportcaster app was made with this idea in mind.  When you boot up the app, the Sportscaster app allows you to track the live box scores of all NFL and Division I NCAA football games.   What really sets this app apart from other stat tracking apps is the ability to follow live Twitter conversations about the game.  Clicking on the “Conversations” menu under any live game will take you to a live Twitter feed of posts about the game you are tracking.  Linking your twitter account to the app allows you to take part in the discussion by giving you the option to reply to any posts that are made.

What I really like about the app is that it gives you the feeling you are watching the game with a large group of people.  I find it fun to hear the insight of other fans and to take part in spirited discussions with other fans live during the game.  I also enjoy the insight that the Twitter feed provides.  Often, I am able to get information about injuries or stats on the feed before they are even mentioned on T.V. Some blogs and individuals also tweet interesting information about the game or players that the T.V. commentators don’t pick up on or mention.   The app seems to do a fairly good job of sorting through all of the tweets made on Twitter and choosing the most relevant ones to display.

After enjoying using the app so much, I was disappointed that I could only use it for football games.  I’m not sure if there are any plans to update the app, but I’m hoping a future update may bring more sports.

If you are one of those sports fans who enjoys discussing the game as much, if not more, than watching the game itself, the Sportscaster app is worth a look.

The Sportcaster app is now available for free on the App Store.
