Apple Flips the Switch On Nuance Speech Recognition in iOS Carrier Testing

nuance-communications-logo.png9to5Mac is reporting that Apple has seeded mobile carriers with a “near-final” build of iOS 5 for testing. The biggest difference between this build, and the builds that Apple has been seeding to developers, is that the carrier builds have Nuance Speech recognition turned on in order to be tested with carrier networks.

Remember, a few weeks ago a hidden microphone button was found hidden in iOS 5. Based on the fact that the button was discovered on the soft keyboard, it’s pretty safe to assume that once tapped, a user could dictate their input, rather than type it. Of course, it was also rumored that Apple would be introducing such a feature in iOS 5, all the way back in May.

In other words, if you’ve been following this story from the beginning, it appears Apple will be including speech recognition technology in iOS 5, even though there was no such announcement for such a major feature during this year’s WWDC. I have a feeling between new iPhones, iOS 5, iCloud, and whatever else Apple decides to roll out, the upcoming Apple announcement event is going to be a knock out.
