The calendar app in iOS 5 has gotten a lot better. It’s so good, in fact, that I no longer feel that burning need to use a third-party calendar app. I still like looking at apps like Calvetica and Agenda, but there really is nothing faster for me than using the built in-calendar app.
The major reason for this app switch is the new gesture support in the beta operating system: the day view now allows me to simply swipe between days, and I love how I can tap and hold on a particular time slot to create an event at that time.
Once an event is made, it is simply a matter of tapping and holding on it to adjust the length of the event, as well as its end time. Creating and managing events in this manner feels so much simpler than fiddling with dial and dialogs. In fact, for most events, all I need to do is tap and hold on a time, enter a name for the event, and press done.
I find that the day and month views cover most of my scheduling needs, but for those times where neither one quite cuts it, the new landscape week view has come in quite handy. It isn’t as useful for managing and editing events, but it does help me compare three days at a glance without having to flick between screens.
What’s more: sticking with the default Calendar app lets me see the date at a glance without fussing with icon badges or having to head back to the lock screen.
There really are changes for everyone in every corner of iOS 5, and I think the new calendar app design should make a lot of people much happier with the stock option.
