Apple Set to Introduce White iPod Touch Next Month, Other Minor Changes

MacRumors is reporting that the next-generation iPod touch will be a very minor upgrade, with the biggest change being the introduction of a white model. The other minor updates include an oleo phobic coating on the display, and a new ambient light sensor.

This news shouldn’t come as a big surprise, as we’ve seen parts destined for the white iPod touch, leaked as far back as July, and rumors of such a change dating even farther back.

It goes without saying that this contradicts recent rumors that suggest that Apple will be rolling out a 3G-enabled iPod touch model. This also puts a damper on the idea that the documents showing a tapered design, are not intended for the iPhone 5, but rather a new iPod touch model.

As much as I hate to say it, but if Apple isn’t updating their iPod touch design, I can’t see them updating their iPhone design, just for continuity. I’m thinking back to the iPhone 3G/3GS transition, wherein the case design didn’t change for the iPhone, and for both of those years, Apple also kept the same iPod touch design.

I hope I’m wrong, because I’m looking forward to a new iPhone design, but if you couple this idea with the fact that we haven’t seen any concrete evidence of a redesigned iPhone, other than a few third-party cases, things aren’t looking good.

With all that said, it appears that Apple will be holding a media event to announce the new devices during the first week of October, and a product launch to follow soon after. Plus, there are rumors that the new there will be a gold master of iOS 5 issued this Friday, along with the announced iCloud reset. So we’ll see.
