iPhone Planned Retention Rate Sits at 89% with Consumers

UBS, a research firm, has issued a report regarding the retention rates of smartphone users. In the report they based “customer loyalty” on whether customer planned to purchase their next handset from the same manufacturer as their current one. With that criteria set, Apple blew everyone away with a massive 89% retention rate.

No one else on the list made it past 40%. HTC had a 40% retention rate, and Android as a whole had a 55% retention rate. This suggests that barely a majority of Android users intend to stay with the platform, but will more than likely switch handset manufacturers.

Another 31% of Android users claimed that they were planning to switch to the iPhone, and 50% of those plan to move to Apple from other manufacturers. In comparison, only 10% are moving away from Apple.

In summary, it seems a nice chunk of smartphone users like Android, but not the device manufacturers. As for Apple, they have a devoted user-base. And as for RIM, they’re toast.
