It turns out that Apple has made some serious design changes to the antenna on the iPhone 4S as compared to the iPhone 4. Apple went to far as to tout the antenna’s new ability to intelligently switch modes to send and receive data on the new device.
MacRumors contacted Spencer Webb of AntennaSys regarding the matter, and he believes that Apple has moved the GPS and Wi-Fi antennas beneath the back glass. From there Apple made the entire rim of the device, both antennas (one at both the bottom and the top of the device), into the antenna which receives cellular signals.
This change, creates something called spatial diversity. Couple the antenna design change with the device’s ability to intelligently switch between modes, will hopefully alleviate any problems one might encounter with cell reception. Ultimately this change allows for better reception of the signal due to the lower likelihood of both antennas being covered at the same time.
Amazing work. And hopefully they’ll avoid another PR fiasco like we saw last year in the form of Antenna gate.
