Here’s the skinny on the camera of the iPhone 4S:
- 8MP CMOS sensor
- 73% more light than the iPhone 4
- “IR Filter for greater accuracy and uniformity”
- “five lens elements”
- 1.5s launch time (2–3x faster than current Android competition, according to Apple)
- 0.5s between shots
Most folks now know that a higher Megapixel account does not equal better photos, but in this case, it is nice to have. If anything, it means that people who are in love with the newly launched Cards app will have higher-res photos to send to Apple for printing 😉
The new camera also boasts some better times in terms of launching and time between shots. My 3GS averages at least three seconds to launch the camera, and about one second between shots. The iPhone 4 averages about 2–3s to launch and about a half a second between shots. The 4S doesn’t blow the old numbers out of the water on paper, but that extra second and a half of waiting time can make all the difference in real world usage.
All told, I’m very excited to get my hands on the 4S and its camera. Camera+, Instagram, and I will have a lot of work to do.
