Apple unveiled the new iPhone 4S today at their ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ event. They did announce an iPhone 5 – so this is the state of the art iPhone model as of now.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new and improved in the iPhone 4S:

New A5, dual-core processor. Described by Apple as 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics. Up to 7x faster in the previous iPhone.

Enhanced Wireless System: “Our engineering team has worked really hard to advance the state of the art that’s never been done in a phone before. It can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality.”

(Much) Improved Camera:

  • 8MP CMOS sensor
  • 73% more light than the iPhone 4
  • “IR Filter for greater accuracy and uniformity”
  • “five lens elements”
  • 1.5s launch time (2–3x faster than current Android competition, according to Apple)
  • 0.5s between shots
  • Oh, and 1080p video

AirPlay Mirroring: If you have an Apple TV this feature lets you share your iPhone screen to it – so everything you do is mirrored to the TV. This is an awesome feature for games, for presentations, and more.

iCloud: Apple’s new cloud-based backup service. This has been working pretty well in the iOS 5 betas – and should be a major step up from iTunes backup in some ways.

iOS 5: The next major update to the iPhone and iPad operating system. It is to be released on October12, two days before the iPhone 4S launch.

Siri Voice Assistant: This new functionality looks amazing. It’s Voice Control on steroids. It lets you use natural language and can do things like this in response to your spoken prompts: tell you what the weather is like in you city, pull up directions to a place you name, read out an email message to you, make a new calendar appointment, search Wikipedia, and lots more. We’ll have more details on this later.

Those are the top-level new and improved features for the iPhone 4S that Apple highlighted today.

What do you think of them? Are these enough to get you to upgrade, or move to the iPhone?
