Some of us are locked in with large family plans and corporate discounts that make it hard to leave. I would have to pay a huge ETF to leave because of my other two lines. Plus, I would lose a 20% corporate discount. That’s a lot of money to part with just to get away.

In my area, AT&Ts cell coverage is actually really good, so I’m fine with that. It’s just their support and policies at the corporate level that completely suck. Thanks to those policies, I will be waiting until 11/11 to order mine.

At 4am on pre-order launch, I tried to order several times from Apple’s website but they couldn’t verify eligibility with AT&T and it didn’t work out. I ordered it from AT&T without issue, delivery on 10/14. Saturday I get an email that they couldn’t confirm something or another and my order was summarily cancelled and they suggested I go to a retail store (what century are we in?). I called them to try and fix it but they couldn’t reinstate my order, they created a new order for delivery whenever. I’ve been an AT&T wireless customer for 10 freaking years, that’s what I get. (Yes, I was with Cingular, etc.) The cellular service works fine for me, the customer service … not so much.

Oh, and Jason, being able to talk and use data at the same time is something you won’t be able to do with Verizon. No, Droid doesn’t.

I went on Apple’s webdress to check upgrade eligibility at around 4am in the morning on pre-order day and the site redirected me to AT&T for more info without telling me if I was eligible for the full discounted price.

I called AT&T at around 630am and was told that I was, indeed, eligible.

I asked the rep to place my order for a black 64gb iPhone 4s.

After she tried 5, count ’em, 5 times she gave up and told me that she had the same problem with a previous customer that also had gone to Apple’s site to check eligibility without success. She suggested I try Apple’s site to pre-order and that she would stay on the line while I did.

I successfully placed my order for my black 64gb iPhone 4s which will be on my doorstep Friday 10/14.

Had I placed my order with AT&T that morning, not only would I have been in a similar situation as you, but, I would have lost my “Grandfathered in” unlimited data plan, as I have heard numerous complaints that AT&T eliminates the UDP and forces a tiered data plan on all those who order through AT&T.

Thank you AT&T… and thank you Apple for saving my UDP.

The AT&T order status page says that pre-ordered devices will ship on or around October 13. I don’t know this for sure, but it seems likely that they are shipping with overnight delivery to ensure everyone receives them on Oct 14.

Got confirmation email. Wasn’t until Sunday that I could access the status site which aside still processing. Called and talked to person that said needed to verify my credit card. Not happy that they had not let me know this. Verified. When I checked my status again, it said ordered on 10/9. At&T you are unbelievable!
Oh, and guess what I got in my email mid-morning on Monday? AT&T email saying I needed to verify my credit card!

Since I’m in Alameda, I figured “cool! That means midnight Thursday!”. By 12:40 I was literally falling over (a LONG week caught up with me) and so I crashed.

I awoke suddenly at 4:30 literally gasping for water. Since I was then awake, I decided to give the order another whirl, and to my amazement it worked, even providing me the grandfathered unlimited data plan (I’m updating from a first gen. Yes, original battery. Still works great, too — so much for the sealed battery concern trolls!). I confirmed the order, and limped back to bed.

I’ve checked to order since (upon hearing all the issues that everyone was having) and it’s good to go for Friday delivery.

I agree that it was likely the Apple/ATT connection that borked, but that there was a LOT of luck involved. I’m still knocking on wood regarding that Friday delivery!!

Last year I preordered through AT&T and had the same doubts. I got my email, then it was in processing for a few days. Then In Progress and then shipping. I got mine the same day they were in stores.

So on this round the same thing is happening again. I was a little worried cause it was in the Processing stage until Monday and I preordered on the 7th. But today it’s In Progress just like last year. So I’m cautiously optimistic I’m getting mine on time.

Not defending AT&T at all. They still suck. Good luck in line!

Apple’s site withstood the initial barrage of traffic – but the miserable failures began as soon as they tried to verify your information with AT&T. Turned that whole middle of the night process into a nightmare.

I spent a good 2+ hours refreshing, trying to order, refreshing, failure, wash – rinse – repeat and finally gave up and went to bed. I figured I do the same as you and take a comfy chair to my local store and camp out through the wee hours of the morning. Luckily when I woke up and tried Apple’s website my order went smooth as silk. So far it’s scheduled for delivery on the 14th so looks like no camping required this year.

I lucked out last year on the pre-order too. Unfortunately I was out of town so FedEx delivered it to my neighbor and it was waiting for me when I got back.
