Macworld notes that the CDMA iPhone 4S models can be GSM-unlocked. The Sprint model will come unlocked right out of the box, while the Verizon iPhone 4S can be unlocked after 60 days in accordance to company policy.
This means customers who travel internationally can buy a local SIM card, and use that during travel instead of roaming on their home network. Which is expensive.
Furthermore, it seems that the AT&T flavor of the iPhone 4S will still be locked. Another questions still in the air is whether the Sprint and Verizon iPhone 4S will be able to accept local, US, SIM cards or if they will only work with international SIMs.
I suppose we’ll find out this Friday when the iPhone 4S begins arriving in users’ hands.
