Why I am Buying the iPhone 4S, and Why I am Going with Sprint

Screen Shot 2011-10-12 at 10.11.07 AM.pngLet me start off by getting a few things out of the way. I have never owned an iPhone before. For that matter I’ve never owned a cell phone before. Not one that was tied to a contract anyway. That’s not to say I didn’t want one- I really wanted one. I just couldn’t comfortably afford one until now.

My economic situation was the largest contributing factor on why I waited this long to get an iPhone, but I knew I wanted to jump in as soon as I could. It just so happened that the time in my life when I could afford it, the iPhone 4S was introduced. And according to the naysayers, I shouldn’t want this device. It’s not a massive overhaul of the iPhone line.

So what. Now that I am economically set (who knows what tomorrow brings, just suspend your disbelief for the sake of argument) I will likely pay the premium and buy next year’s model as well. In short, now was as good a time as any for me to jump in. Also, and I know this sounds absurd, because it sounds absurd when I say it aloud to myself in a quiet room, but I made the plunge because of Steve. I felt like I owed him, and the company he created. Crazy, I know, right?

As for my purchasing decision. I got the 16GB black model. Nothing fancy. My media library is most certainly bigger than 16GB, but I can comfortably carry around the media that I consume the most in that storage size. Besides, if I am going to upgrade yearly like I plan to, I am not going to shell out the money for much more than the base model. That said, I seriously considered the white version, because it is something different. I’m just afraid I would stain it with marinara sauce or something of the sort, which is an event that will happen sooner rather than later to the black one I’m getting.

As for the network I chose. It really made little difference to me. In fact, as I was hitting Apple’s pre-order servers at the same time everyone else was. I was willing to go with any carrier that I could get through to. I did have one carrier in mind though- Sprint.

Finally I gave up on Apple’s pre-order service. I simply wasn’t getting through. I went to bed, woke up, and tried to preorder through Sprint. Although I did not feel so strongly about the matter that I would refuse to get an iPhone on any other carrier, I felt that I wanted to go with Sprint. Why? Simple. I felt sorry for them. Another absurd line of thought coming from yours truly, but I did. They struck me as a company sincerely trying to compete, but were fledgling due to the lack of the iPhone in their lineup of devices.

As for the more cynical aspects, I believe because they are in a distant third place amongst US carriers, they will be far more likely to bend over backwards if an issue arises, or their customers, me included, have a request. They simply need the business, and are more inclined to do whatever it takes to keep customers. Besides, if I don’t like the service, I’ll just switch in two years.

In short, I’ve got the money, it’s an awesome device, Steve Jobs died, and I felt sorry for Sprint. That’s why I bought the iPhone 4S. Friday can’t get here soon enough.
