As the iPhone 4S goes on sale today, Sprint is now offering up a clarification on earlier claims that the company would be offering an unlocked micro-SIM slot so that customers in other countries can insert a local micro-SIM card to avoid roaming charges.
Even after briefly refuting those claims, Sprint is now stating that they will indeed unlock the micro-SIM slot for customers in good standing. So it boils down to this- Both Sprint and Verizon ship their iPhone 4S’s with “roaming SIMs” installed. However, if a customer requests it to be unlocked, the carrier can do so, allowing customers to avoid roaming charges.
Sprint doesn’t seem to have a good answer for why they will ship the device unlocked, then lock it, then unlock it upon request. It is almost like this is an afterthought. So we’ll see how this works out.
