iOS 5.0
Picked by: Jay
My pick this week comes directly from Apple, and it isn’t my absent iPhone 4S, but Apple’s other gem, iOS 5. Many of my colleagues here at iSource have been enjoying the beta release and have been toying with Apple’s latest operating system for their iDevices for months now. I, on the other hand, had been unwilling to risk my only phone to beta test. Besides, I need enough help from these great contributors at iSource, and I’d hate to lose their expertise by bothering them even more.
When my pre-ordered iPhone 4S didn’t make to my house by 10/14 – no thanks to AT&T – I went ahead and upgraded my stiff and clunky jailbroken 3GS to iOS 5 and rediscovered the joy that is Apple. The mentionable standouts for me are improved notifications (the main reason I jailbroke), iMessage (bye, bye TextPlus), and quick access to information from that pull-down screen (local weather without opening an app). Add wifi sync, smooth action in the GUI, and the other highlights mentioned here by Thomas, and I get the hype my colleagues were raving about!

RingShuffle (v1.0)
Picked by: Joe Tomasone
Maybe that hottie you met at the bar was a 10 last night, but is looking more and more like a clingy stalker today. Worse, your new “clingster” has your phone number, and is beginning a campaign of suffocation that is making you wish you’d never given out your number at all.
Ever wished that you had a “disposable number” – a phone number that worked for a little while, and then vanished without a trace?
Now you can. Enter RingShuffle for iPhone.
RingShuffle gives you a second incoming phone number that is good for seven days. Calls to that number are routed to your iPhone, so anyone calling it won’t know the difference. When the seven days are up, the number vanishes – along with the calls from your “problem”. If you decide before seven days are up that it’s time for a change, you can cancel that number and optionally “shuffle” to a new one at any time. You can choose the area code you’d like your Shuffle number in, and you’ll be presented with a list of numbers to choose from – so RingShuffle is also great for getting a temporary number in an area you are traveling to. I’m pretty sure that Michael Westen is using RingShuffle too. *
The App and service are currently free (“for a limited time”), and appears to be limited to the US only. The app is available in the App Store.
* I totally made that up, but if I was him, I would definitely be using it. It’s perfect for spy work, or so I hear….

Incase Slider Case for the iPhone 4 / 4S
Picked by: PatrickJ
I bought this case for my iPhone 4 back at a time when my local Apple store had a pretty small selection of cases, and I honestly didn’t feel that enamored of it when I first made the purchase. I thought it would be a usable case, but perhaps nothing to write home about. And I have loved this case ever since the first time I put it on the iPhone 4.
Among the things I enjoy about the Incase Slider are:
It’s not flashy looking but it is quite a handsome, solid looking case
It’s far from heavy but it’s as solid as it looks and easy to grip
It doesn’t add much bulk at all to the iPhone 4 / 4S, but it offers full protection for the back and sides of the phone and a decent level of protection for the screen as it leaves it just slightly recessed within the case.
It’s wonderfully easy and quick to put the case on AND take it off.
The cutouts for the ports, button, and camera are all done with precision but also generously – so it is able to work perfectly with both the iPhone and the new iPhone 4S. That’s a big bonus for me, as it would have been one of the first accessories I bought for my 4S.
Models are available in black or white.
