Don’t Expect Speedy Delivery From New “Cards” App

Apple recently introduced their Cards app/service for the iPhone that allows you to create and send a real, honest-to-goodness, printed card.   Given that the app appears to cater to dated events such as birthdays and holidays, you’d expect there to be a reasonable delivery time so that you can plan when to send the card so as not to arrive too late nor too early.   Unfortunately, this appears to not be the case.

I gave the app a try, and sent a birthday card to my daughter.   I created and ordered it 3 days before her birthday, figuring that should be about enough time to print and mail it.   However, it showed up 8 days later (and after I had already apologized to her).   The card was postmarked 4 days after it was ordered, and then took 4 days (including a weekend, granted) to arrive.

I must say, however, that the card was very nicely printed – but it did seem to have that “mass-made” air about it – like those holiday cards you get from large companies that have an obviously computer-rendered signature along with a personal-sounding message.

If Apple wants to truly make a go of this service, they will need to either step up their delivery efforts, or provide accurate ship dates; otherwise, this service is pretty much pointless.  I’m already thinking that simply buying and mailing a card is much more personal and predictable.
