Only for the customer to be told after they’ve ordered and paid for it under the illusion that it would be delivered within 2-4 days that it would actually take 2 weeks due to their being no stock available.

That and not actually being able to tell customers who ring up the status of their order as they don’t actually show up until the phone has shipped.

Plenty of angry people in there.

I tried repeatedly on the Apple site and the AT&T site. Once Apple turned off their system and just started making “reservations” for phones I was able to make two separate orders for iPhone 4S upgrades on AT&T’s website. I have a corporate code attached to my account, so my AT&T upgrade went through AT&T Premium service, not the standard retail. I received both phones on launch day without any issues. I have sent Executive Email Carpet Bombs (EECB) to AT&T before and they have flagged my account. Since then, I never have any issues with AT&T.

TJ, it’s a question of information. if only 1 person had their phone delayed, for whatever reason, this information needs to be relayed to the consumer. Then theres the fact that ATT knowingly revised their delivery plans without informing the customer, as well as actively placed “holds” on accounts. with this information, the waiting process is easier. without knowing, anticipation builds, feeding your anxieties.

I preordered in store Oct 8th at 9am. i had no problem waiting two weeks for my phone. it is now 20 days. i’m still in “pending” status. I have now grown impatient. I live in NYC. the ATT stores in the entire city are not receiving shipments (at least thats what they tell me). meanwhile, the apple store has a reserve today, pickup tomorrow option. though with the “hold” from ATT, i am unable to persue that option. I tried cancelling my shipment through ATT and removing my Hold. Yet found out part of their policy is to have a 7 to 14 day processing period to remove me from the hold. Do you find this acceptable? is ATT not equipped to hurry this process along to “make the customer happy??”

so still i wait…”order pending”. waiting for a rep to make me a happy customer.

Haven’t heard a word. The order is still pending.

Meanwhile, my local Best Buy has plenty of them in stock. 🙁

Stores cant touch online orders, Customer care cant touch store orders. Traditionally there has never been a way to cancel a direct fulfill order but if the manager has been in the business a while there was a backdoor cancel thats possible, just risky (ie. you could end up with the phone in the end and att doesnt get the funds as well as att not getting the upgrade/activation etc). Id also say this year was 10x better than last year….i remember doing manual receipts bc all the servers crashed during preorder day as well as launch day.

“Nope, and my card hasn’t been charged as of this morning. I had a lengthy (and frustrating) discussion with the manager. They were told that due to the high demand of store volume last year for the 4, that AT&T changed their stock allocation to be mostly toward the stores and available on launch day…. those that ordered online before 4pmEST are in the first wave and will get it today, The next few waves go to the retail locations to have stock today. Then lastly, those who ordered in the store or after 4PM are pushed to the end of the line as low priorities. If you ordered on the store fairly early, expect it the week after next, by 10/28. if you ordered at the end of the day, expect it the first week of November. In-store is low priority. I don’t intend to frustrate or incite – just the info I was given and so far it looks accurate from this thread and the state of my order. 32GB Blk.

Also, i work at one of the biggest stores in my area and we received the biggest shipment on launch day (of course sold out) and none of our stores have gotten a 2nd shipment in. Lastly people who ordered on apple.com and had activating issues was actually apples problem and not atts.

And there are still lots of us still waiting for our phones. I preordered 2 16gb white 4S’s around noon on Oct. 8th from my local AT&T store and still haven’t received them. I didn’t necessarily expect they’d arrive by the 14th, but I never guessed I’d be stuck in this situation where I don’t even know when I’ll get my phones. Having read all the comments on the various forums, I haven’t even bothered to call AT&T. Being further misled and lied to would only make me more upset. I’m not angry about not having the new phones as much as I’m shocked at how poorly AT&T is handling the situation. I just hope they are prepared for the long lines when the next iPhone launches because their preorder system is a joke and won’t be trusted a second time by many of us.

I was surprised that there wasn’t a line. The lady who took my order told me that the phone would arrive in 2 to 3 weeks. It arrived on 10/20. I understand, and share some of, the frustration of the author of this article. However, I’m not sure why he was so hot to get the iPhone ASAP that he actually went out and paid full retail for it.

Oh – and TJ, you’ll have to remember that at that point, I had no idea when it would ship, and no one at AT&T could tell me when that might be. I was getting different answers from everyone I spoke to. Even if I had known that it would only be an additional week, I had reason to need it that day – for our review. Generally speaking, no, a week delay under normal circumstances isn’t a heartbreaker – but the idea here is that AT&T intentionally diverted stock from paid pre-order customers who were told to expect their purchase on the 14th and instead sold them to anyone who walked in the door that day. If you pre-ordered something and were promised delivery on a given date, didn’t get it, then walked into the store to see them selling lots of that product to people who didn’t pre-order, wouldn’t you feel deceived?

I have been waiting for my iPhone for almost three weeks, and I’m about at wit’s end because my previous iPhone died at the end of September. It’s so frustrating, and all my family members and friends keep laughing about my having to use a clunky prepaid phone for such a long time. I have so many AT&T services — U-verse, land line, wireless, Internet — that it’s frustrating that my patronage counts for nothing.

Anyone who thinks these are isolated incidents only needs to visit forums like the U-Talk wireless forum: http://forums.att.com/t5/Apple-iPhone/bd-p/apple

Actually, it wasn’t a few people, and they weren’t mishandled – they were intentionally diverted to in-store sales – apparently facts that I didn’t make quite clear.

Take a look at the AT&T pre-order thread – currently 274 pages; it’s probably most enlightening to start at the end and work backwards.

Sorry also to say that with MILLIONS of pre-orders, they’re bound to have some mis-handled. I also know you were anxious to get the latest and greatest the very day it was released … but sometimes you just have to wait. Do you feel better now having had the phone for a week longer than you would have? Or in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

Bottom line, they messed up an online order. Then the local AT&T reps stepped up to the plate and tried to make you a happy customer … which hopefully you are.

I have since been back to the same Apple store, a smaller one that gives good service, and once saw a line with maybe 25 people waiting for the 4s. Apple employees were handing out bottled water on this warm day. Verizon has better coverage where I live and my overseas travel has diminished greatly, so the need for a SIM card overseas is nearly non-existent and I’ve never had the need to talk and surf simultaneously. So once again, I’m a happy camper.

After reading your initial post prior to launch day I started to panic. I called AT&T and they assured me that I would have the phone on the 14th. They never gave me a reason why it remained in pending status. I finally got a tracking number for it. AT&T said it would be shipped via FedEx however it was shipped via UPS. My issu was that they left it outside on my doorstep. They didn’t even bother ring the doorbell. If I hadn’t been obsessively checking the tracking number, and saw that it was marked
Delivered I would have never known it arrived. That really pissed me off! I call AT&T and ups and got the standard apology. What if it ad been stolen? What where they going to do?

I ordered my 4S from ATT on launch morning. I received an email as well, with order pending. Status was pending for 4 days. However, just like last time for the 4, the status eventually got updated and the phone shipped aas planned and I received it on launch day. I went to their web site and updated my account from the 4 to the 4S in less than 2 minutes. I had my phone, working and online, before launch day was over and within 10 minutes of getting the box from the FedEx dude.

I don’t think your odd experience is representative of the overall experience, and a bit unfair to ATT. I have several friends who got the 4S from them and form them via Apple.com and everyone got their phone on launch day as expected.

We pre-ordered ours from the Apple store on Friday at 10:15pm. We received email confirmations few minutes later and that’s it. At 10:37pm I read the first Twitter saying that delivery dates from the Apple store were now 1-2 weeks more. We got ours at 11AM with no issue on launch day but thanks to AT&T activation mess I couldn’t activate my phone until 5pm and hubs couldn’t until 8pm!!!
