They may want to combine the technologies, use the best from both.

Also, most likely, when Apple comes out with their new maps, the competition will want to jump at the chance to do something similar, so Apple has secured any possible competition.

It’s just like how they buy the technology that goes into their computers. When they have something new, they buy up all the parts from wherever they can so when they come out with the product, and others want to copy it, they can’t because there are no parts to go around. It’s why the iPad competitors took so long so come out with something… they didn’t have the parts.
