Business Insider is reporting that one of their sources is claiming that to have access to an iPhone 5 prototype and gives details on the design. Of course, it was rumored running up to the iPhone 4S’ launch that the new iPhone would be completely redesigned. That didn’t pan out, and speculation now points to next year’s model seeing a complete redesign.

The report also notes that Apple had indeed planned to ship this mythical iPhone 5 this year, but had to scrap their plans only months before the iPhone 4S (which took the 5’s place) was introduced. As for the iPhone 5’s design, the report claims that it has a 4-inch screen, an Aluminum backing, a capacitive home button, an all around “flatter” form-factor, faster hardware, a 10-megapixel camera, and what we know now as Siri.

Lastly, the report notes that the primary resistance to this prototype design came from Steve Jobs himself. Jobs supposedly argued that the 4-inch screen would lead to fragmentation due to the differences in screen sizes, and developers creating applications for both. This is something Apple his tried to avoid.

I seriously doubt this is what happened. First off, Business Insider has a shoddy record regarding Apple rumors. Secondly, the story seems fragmented. Jobs didn’t like the design, but it was supposed to launch this year anyway? That makes no sense even if you have the most passing of knowledge of how Apple and Steve Jobs work. Lastly, the details of the device itself sounded like a mashup of all the bigger-than-life rumors leading up to the launch.
