Comic Zeal 5 for iPhone and iPad is a Marvel

ComicZeal, my iOS comic reader of choice, got itself updated in a big way earlier this week. The new version features a completely revamped UI with a greater focus on visuals (beautiful list and grid views), quickly organizing contents (a new slider system), and the ability to differentiate between western comics and manga.

The new slider system in particular deserves some extra attention. Instead of the classic iOS multi-selection system (present in apps like Mail and Photos) that requires you to enter an Edit mode, tap on titles, and then proceed with an action, the Comic Zeal slider functions more like shifting items from one hand to the other. You use the slider in list view by placing it above a comic and then swipe right across the title to move it into the slider.

You can use the slider to collect comics for deletion, re-organizing similar titles into collections, or for simply re-ordering them within an existing collection. The mechanics sound a little complex when written out like this, but they’re actually pretty intuitive, and, more importantly, feel very much at home on the iPad. These are gestures that feel good and make sense.

If you were looking for an excuse to pick up the $8 Comic Zeal app for your iPhone and iPad, there has really been no better time to buy. Just make sure you’ve got a set of comic files (CBR or CBZ) at the ready so that you’ll have something to read.
