Forbes is reporting on a research note by Brian Blair of Wedge Partners who claims that the next-generation iMac could have television functionality as has been rumored. He expects this update to make it’s way to market sometime in the first half of 2012.
Blair also believes that Apple will slowly push the display sizes from 27-inches to 32, then on to 42, 50, and 55 inch models. In sum, he states that the rumored Apple television set will begin with an iMac, in varying sizes, powered by iCloud. Take all of this with a gran of salt, as Blair notes that this is purely speculation.
It’s worth remembering that Apple danced around this idea with the introduction of Front Row in 2005. Front Row ultimately spread throughout the Mac line before it faded into obscurity and was ultimately killed off with the introduction of OS X Lion earlier this year.
All of this stems from the long-running rumor that Apple is indeed working on entering the television set market. This could come as early as next year or 2013 and would be powered by Siri.
I can’t see Apple doing this, simply because their half-hearted effort in the form of Front Row kinda flopped. Granted there were some who sore by the software, so much so that there are workarounds to bring the functionality back to OS X Lion, but it really never caught on with the general public. So we’ll see if any of this pans out.
