Latest iPad Rumors Claim Next-Generation Model will be Thicker, Still Support Smart Covers, Retina Display, Launch in February

Several different reports have emerged regarding the next-generation iPad, the first of which from Macotakara claims that the new model will still have the same screen dimensions, support the smart covers introduced alongside the iPad 2, but may end up being thicker. The report is also accompanied by a new photo which may belong to the next-generation iPad even though the site gives no explanation of the photo.

In a separate report, Citi analyst Richard Gardner (via BusinessInsider) has claims that the next-generation iPad will launch in February with a high-resolution, 2048×1536 retina display. He also notes that Apple has cleared any technical problems that were prohibiting the mass manufacturing of this new device even though there are still reports circulating that claim otherwise.

Neither of these reports really state anything new, but as usual, it’s a pretty good sign that something is up when it is being continuously talked about. As for the bit regarding the new iPad being “thicker” I still don’t buy it. Apple did not make that design trade off for the iPad 2 just so they can turn around and make it thicker (and presumably heavier) the next year. As a company, Apple usually plans ahead.

In short, Apple wouldn’t make the iPad 2 thinner if they could hold that as a baseline. The next model may still be as thick, but it cannot be thicker, and thinner would be better.
