Report Claims Apple (and Google) Working on Wearable Computer Concepts

Screen Shot 2011-12-19 at 1.42.15 PM.pngThe New York Times is reporting that Apple and Google are working on wearable computing concepts in an attempt to further augment their mobile products customers already own. Some of these devices could be peripheral, and communicate with the users’ iPhone or iPod, but more interesting is the fact that Apple was looking into wearable devices that far outpaces the meager watch faces Apple included with the iPod Nano.

In fact, the report notes that Apple has a small team who is conceptualizing, and even prototyping some of their ideas for wearable computing devices. One idea in specific, is a curved-glass iPod that could wrap around a users’ wrist and could be interacted with via Apple’s Siri artificial intelligence software.

It’s also worth noting at this time, that Apple had hired Richard DeVaul, an expert in wearable computing, but he only spent 18 months at the company before moving to Google. There he is presumably doing the same kind of work.

If such a device were to use Siri, it would of course need built-in internet capabilities to communicate with Apple’s servers. At least as the technology stands currently. It’s an absolutely fascinating concept nonetheless. We’re quickly approaching sci-fi levels of technology, which makes every day worth waking up for.
